Alesse Information
Alesse is a medication used to prevent pregnancy or to regulate your
menstrual cycle. Certain brand of birth control pills may be used for treating
acne. Consult your doctor before using this medication. Alesse does not
protect you or your partner against sexually transmitted diseases.

Alesse Directions of Use
Take Alesse with food or immediately after a meal to prevent stomach upset.
Take this medication at the same time every day. Follow the directions and
dosage exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Use a supplemental form of birth
control during the first week of taking this medication., since it takes a while to
be effective.

Alesse Side Effects
This medication may cause dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, stomach
upset, bloating or nausea. If these side effects persist or worsen, contact your
doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: severe depression, groin or calf
pain, sudden severe headache, chest pain, shortness of breath, lumps in the
breast, weakness or tingling in the arms or legs, yellowing of eyes or skin.

Precautions
Before taking Alesse, tell your doctor your entire medical history, and family
medical history, especially asthma, high blood pressure, kidney or liver
disease, heart disease, stroke, history of jaundice, high blood pressure during
pregnancy, excessive weight gain or fluid retention during a menstrual cycle,
blood clots, heart attacks, seizures, migraine headaches, breast cancer, high
cholesterol or lipids, diabetes or depression. Depending on the strength of this
medication it may cause a darkening of the pigment of the face called
melasma. You should avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Do not smoke as
birth control pills increase your risk of strokes, blood clots, high blood pressure,
heart attacks, gall bladder disease, vision problems and liver tumors. If you are
nearsighted or wear contact lenses you may develop vision problems, also
your tolerance for the lenses may decrease. If you have recently had surgery,
will be confined to a chair or bed, or have recently delivered a baby, consult
your doctor before taking Alesse. If you think you are pregnant, may become
pregnant consult your doctor immediately. Do not breastfeed while taking
Alesse as it does pass into the breastmilk and will cause serious side effects to
a nursing infant.

Drug Interactions
Some medications will decrease the effectiveness of birth control. This may
result in a pregnancy. Drugs that may cause this effect may include: many
antibiotics(cephalospoins, chloramphenical, macrolides, penicillins,
tetracyclines, sulfas); aprepitant, bexarotene, bosentan, dapsone, griseofulvin,
certain HIV protease inhibitors- amprenavir, nelfinavir, ritonavir, modafinil,
nevirapine, rifamycins; many seizure medications- barbiturates,
carbamazepine, phenytoin, primidone, topiramate. St John's Wart. Before
taking Alesse tell your doctor about any prescription and nonprescription
medications/herbal medications you are taking; especially of thyroid hormone
drugs; diazapem, chlordiazepoxide; prednizone-like drugs; antidepressants,
beta blockers, blood thinners, insuline. This medication may effect thyroid lab
tests. Inform your doctor and the lab technicians that you are using this
medication. Do not drink alcohol as it will increase the side effects.

Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. Poison Control Number- 1-800-222-1222.
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding.

Alesse Storage
Store at room temperature between 59 degrees and 86 degrees. Keep away
from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom.
